Over the past few years, I’ve become completely obsessed with discovering wild, beautiful places across South Africa that haven’t been overrun by crowds and hashtags. While I haven’t (yet!) camped at every one of these spots, I’ve spent hours researching, talking to fellow campers, and planning future trips to these remote gems that promise solitude, stargazing, and soul-soothing landscapes.
Here’s my curated wishlist of 10 hidden camping gems across South Africa — a mix of places I’ve visited and others I can’t wait to explore. No big-name resorts, no crowds. Just pure off-the-grid magic.
Tucked away near Redelinghuys, this sandstone paradise is a dream if you’re into 4×4 trails and surreal rock formations. The campsites are spaced far enough apart that you feel completely alone. At night, the stars here honestly compete with Sutherland.
Why it’s on my list: That moment when the fire’s dying down and the sky just erupts with stars.

To learn about this hidden gem, you’ll probably need to call someone’s cousin to get a spot. But it’s nestled in the heart of the Cederberg, with natural pools and mountain views that make you feel like you’re in a Tolkien novel.
Why it’s on my list: Waking up to the sound of baboons arguing across the valley. What’s not to love?

A privately owned piece of bush heaven, this one’s for the minimalists. No electricity, barely any signal, and the occasional curious kudu wandering through.
Why it’s on my list: It’s the kind of quiet that reboots your entire nervous system.
This is true wilderness camping with rustic facilities and riverfront plots. It’s raw, real, and utterly rejuvenating. You’ll need a decent vehicle to get there, but the drive alone is worth it.
Why it’s on my list: Falling asleep to the river murmuring and waking up with monkeys on the roof.

Set on a working farm near Dargle, this place is ideal for campers who want a touch of comfort without losing the wild. There are hot showers, and you can buy fresh eggs in the morning.
Why it’s on my list: Perfect mix of rural charm and wild Midlands weather.
Part of the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve, this place is next-level remote. Hiking trails, mountain air, and a sense of being totally off the map. It’s a must for overland explorers.
Why it’s on my list: That first breath of highland air after the drive.
Ok, this one’s technically SANParks, but the camping here is far from mainstream. Think silence so loud it buzzes, and night skies that make your jaw drop.
Why it’s on my list: No signal. No people. Just you, the stars, and your thoughts.
Everyone thinks they know about Tietiesbaai, but few have actually camped there off-season. In winter, it becomes a windswept, mystical coastline that feels entirely yours.
Why it’s on my list: Braaing while wrapped in a jacket, watching the Atlantic crash into the rocks.

Lush forest meets wild coastline. If you want your camping to come with snorkelling, birdwatching, and the occasional pod of dolphins, this is the spot.
Why it’s on my list: Falling asleep to waves and waking up to birdsong.
Set right on a mountain stream, this place is perfect for a weekend dip-and-braai situation. It’s family-run and still feels like a secret.
Why it’s on my list: Ice-cold water and warm-hearted hosts.
Camping in South Africa isn’t just about where you pitch your tent — it’s about how you show up. These spots are part of my journey as I explore, plan, and dream of the perfect off-grid getaway. Whether you’ve already visited them or they’re on your list too, I hope they inspire your next adventure.
